Can you buy $500 of one gift card?

Usually not in one go, and that is the part people find out at the checkout. Almost every discounted gift card
offer caps itself, and the caps stack in three different ways:

• Per membership or account – the warehouse clubs run on this, typically two per membership,
  sometimes only once every 14 days.
• Per denomination – a limit of five can mean five $50 cards and five $100 cards.
• Per day – some sellers cap what you can spend on gift cards in 24 hours, whatever the brand.

So a larger amount is built from several stores at once: take the deepest discount up to its limit, then the next
one. The table above shows the limit next to each brand, and the other stores carrying the same card. One more
thing worth knowing: the brand can limit you too – some apps only let you redeem a few gift cards into your
balance per day, even though buying them was fine.

How to get the most out of a gift card discount

• Stack it with a card offer. A gift card bought at Sam’s Club
  still earns whatever your credit card pays on that purchase, so the discounts add up.
• Check the other stores before you buy. The same gift card is often sold at several stores at
  once, at different discounts. The deepest ones are usually at the warehouse clubs, which need a paid membership –
  the table shows the alternatives so you can see what is worth buying without one.
• Buy for something you already planned to spend on. A discount on a brand you never use is not a saving.
• Watch the limits. Most of these cap how many cards one person can buy, and some are one per account for ever.
• Check the expiry rules, not just the deal’s end date. The offer ends on the date shown; the card itself
  usually doesn’t expire, but the store’s terms decide that.
• Digital cards arrive in minutes, physical ones ship – worth knowing when you are buying a present for tomorrow.
