What's new

  • The card no longer charges foreign transaction fees.
  • Points Boost has been added to the card.
  • Cellphone insurance/phone protection was removed as a benefit.

Why everyone is talking about it

  • Some travelers are happy the foreign transaction fee is gone, and some are timing the card with trips abroad. (see the discussion)
  • Some people report successfully product-changing older Freedom cards to Freedom Flex. (see the discussion)
  • Some people ask whether Chase will match an earlier $200 approval to the new $250 offer. (see the discussion)
  • Some people are excited about getting 7x on dining in the upcoming quarter. (see the discussion)
  • Some people report that Chase Freedom Flex no longer provides cell phone insurance coverage. (see the discussion)
  • Some people find the new Freedom Flex card design underwhelming compared to the app picture. (see the discussion)
  • People are asking whether being 4/24 (specifically 4/24) affects approval timing for the Flex. (see the discussion)

How it earns

  • Rotating categories earn 5X points on up to $1,500 in spend per quarter.
  • The card earns 3X on dining and 3X on drugstores.
  • The card earns 5X on Chase Travel bookings and 1X everywhere else.
  • That's at most $75 a quarter in bonus rewards (5% of $1,500); spending above the cap earns the base rate.

Before you apply

  • You will get the bonus even if you are an authorized user on another person’s Freedom Flex card.
  • The 5/24 rule: Chase usually declines you if you opened 5 or more personal credit cards, from any bank, in the last 24 months.
  • Offers can differ between the public page, a branch and a referral link. Check the offer on the page you land on, or open the card page in a private (incognito) window to compare.
  • You need to spend $500 in 3 months, about $167 a month. Apply only if your normal spending (groceries, bills, gas) covers that. Don't buy things just to hit the bonus.
  • Run the issuer's prequalification check first if it has one. It's a soft pull and doesn't affect your credit score.
  • If you carry a balance, the interest will cost more than the rewards earn. Pay in full every month.
  • Planning a mortgage, refinance or car loan soon? A new card adds an inquiry and an account; wait until after.
  • Card rules change: confirm the bonus, the fee and the terms on the page you actually apply from.
